Start with operator tasks

List the conditions an operator must recognize and the actions permitted for each role. Organize the equipment hierarchy and screen navigation around those tasks.

Keep local machine control, supervisory actions, reporting and protective functions distinct. A supervisory application does not replace approved safety or equipment-protection systems.

Define the information model

Map process measurements, equipment states, units and data quality. Identify which data is shown live and which values need historical recording.

Specify recording intervals and retention requirements from the review task. A high sample rate is not automatically useful for every process variable.

Agree on alarms and events

Define which conditions require action, how priorities are assigned and how acknowledgement or review works. Distinguish an event worth recording from an alarm that requires an operator response.

Review the workflow with the people responsible for operating and maintaining the plant.

Plan validation and handover

Use agreed test scenarios to check screens, alarm behavior, history and permitted actions. Include loss of communications and recovery in the review.

Document access roles, backup responsibilities, change control and operator handover as part of the project scope.
