KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Start with a defined production loss and a representative machine group.
- Keep job-specific cycle times and reject counts visible in the OEE model.
- Validate counts, shift boundaries and offline behaviour before expanding.

Start with a production question, not a dashboard
For a manufacturing team in Ahmedabad evaluating OEE software, the first decision is which production loss to investigate. A mixed-product shop may need to separate setup time from unexplained stops; another team may need dependable output counts before attempting an OEE calculation. The same installation scope will not fit both questions.
Consider an illustrative component manufacturer with CNC machines and a separate inspection station. The team sees late orders but does not know whether the main constraint is changeovers, machine interruptions or waiting for inspection. This is a planning scenario, not a reported WhereFy customer deployment.
Define the signals and operating definitions
List the controller model, accessible interface, cycle signal, part counter and current method of recording rejects for each machine. A machine being powered on does not establish that it is producing. Agree what running, setup, idle, stopped and unavailable data mean before building a report.
For OEE, define planned production time, actual run time, ideal cycle time for each product and good quantity. Where those inputs are incomplete, begin with state timelines and availability reporting. Adding an estimated quality factor to make a complete-looking score can make the report less useful.
Review changeovers alongside downtime
Use a shift review to compare the last good part of one job with the first accepted part of the next. Decide which events belong to the changeover definition and where the operator records the reason. Keep the original equipment timestamps separate from later annotations.
The daily discussion should identify an event, an owner and a next action. If the timeline shows repeated waiting after a tool change, inspect the preparation process before recommending a faster machine. Visibility helps locate the question; the operating team still needs to investigate it.
Make the pilot testable
A useful pilot might cover one production group across representative products and shifts. Reconcile automatic counts against a supervised manual sample, confirm the shift boundary and check what happens when a gateway or network connection is interrupted.
Agree a handover that includes tag definitions, reporting rules, operator instructions and a list of known data gaps. Compare subsequent periods using similar products and scheduled time. An apparent OEE improvement can otherwise be caused by a changed reporting definition.
How WhereFy can help define the scope
WhereFy Smart Insight addresses machine-state visibility, downtime investigation and shift reporting. PLC–IoT integration and engineering services can be scoped around the installed equipment, including the acquisition method and dashboard requirements. Any compatibility and site work must be confirmed during project review.
For an Ahmedabad enquiry, send your equipment list, approximate machine count, required reports and site constraints. That gives the team a basis for discussing a monitoring pilot or a broader turnkey integration without assuming a particular controller or guaranteed return.
