Industrial AI starts with reliable machine data

Build an explainable data foundation before evaluating digital twins, industrial edge analytics or AIoT applications.

Begin with a production question

Choose a measurable problem, such as recurring downtime, changes in cycle time or consumption outside production hours. Identify the information that would make an investigation useful.

This defines the first acquisition scope. A broad promise of an intelligent factory is harder to evaluate than a clearly stated operating question.

Document signal meaning and quality

For each input, record the asset, unit, timestamp, source and expected behavior. Distinguish missing communication from a measured stopped state.

Validate representative data with operators and engineering teams. Record product mix, shift changes and other conditions that affect interpretation.

Choose the role of edge processing

An industrial gateway may collect and organize equipment signals near the source while selected data is made available to operational applications.

Define buffering, timestamping, network responsibilities and behavior during interruptions as project requirements. A particular capability should be confirmed for the selected architecture, not assumed from the word edge.

Evaluate an advanced application separately

Siemens’ IIoT materials emphasize operational data and manufacturing visibility. NVIDIA’s manufacturing work includes simulation and physical AI. These describe a broad technology landscape rather than a mandatory next step for every monitoring installation.

Ask whether a reporting rule, process change, engineering investigation or evaluated model best addresses the problem. Define acceptance criteria before deciding on an AI scope.
